Lord Mayor rewards first company to respond to Pollards Challenge

On Tuesday 22nd January 2008 the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress will be at the Cathedral Archer Project to help serve lunch and to present a certificate to G&J Hall Limited, the first company to respond to the Pollards’ Challenge to feed the homeless.  The Challenge for 50 companies to pay £500 each to pay for a lunch for the homeless at the Cathedral Archer Project was issued last month by Pollards Managing Director, Simon Bower who funded a Christmas Dinner at the day drop in centre for the homeless and vulnerable of Sheffield.

The Lord Mayor is delighted to be presenting a certificate to G&J Hall Director, Richard Edwards in recognition of his stepping up to the Pollards Challenge and adds, “I hope this is the first of many to meet the Pollard’s challenge.  The Cathedral Archer Project not only feeds the homeless but also gives them access to services that we take for granted, such as a postal address, access to showers and laundry facilities as well as regular visits by a nurse and dentist.  By companies taking up this challenge, the Catheral Archer Project will be able to use more of its funds to help support its clients and help them to move on into a more stable lifestyle.”

Richard Edwards, G&J Hall, comments, “I visited the Cathedral Archer Project last year and saw the benefit of the work they do, after that there was no question in my mind.  This is a very worthwhile cause and I would encourage other companies to get involved.”

The Cathedral Archer Project is the only centre of its kind in the city centre of Sheffield.  It delivers a high quality service to people from a variety of backgrounds associated with homelessness including rough sleepers, drug and alcohol addicts, women street workers, probation clients, asylum seekers and refugees. With support most will be able to establish secure lifestyles free from drugs and alcohol and the lifestyle that accompanies them.  The project serves in excess of 10,500 hot breakfasts each year, in addition to over 4000 hot meals and other basic provisions to support the growing number of homeless people in the city.  Clients can access a host of services at the centre including education (Art, Numeracy, Literacy, Crafts/Sewing, IT, Women’s Group and a Keep it Safe Group for drug users), laundry services, showers, housing and benefits advice and support, food parcels, health services, telephone and internet access and a postal address for those of no fixed abode.  Many of these are offered through partnership work.
