PROFILE OF A TRUSTEE

Gareth Owen by day is a solicitor for Yorkshire law firm, Keeble Hawson, in his spare time he is into rugby and flying, but also supports the Cathedral Archer Project.  He is a trustee and sits on the board of directors.

Gareth was the founding trustee of the Cathedral Archer Project Limited when it was set up in 1996 and has been company secretary for 13 years.  He provides any legal input that may be required and more recently his business acumen has been invaluable.

There is more to the role—Gareth also acts as an ambassador to the project, promoting the work we do for the homeless around his network and beyond.  He does not get involved in the practical day to day elements but has been known to join in our fundraising activities.  Gareth persuaded a team of solicitors from Keeble Hawson to join him on both the Big Sleep Outs we held last year and in 2007.

If you ask Gareth why he is involved, he response is, “Engagement.  I got hooked from day one.  It is obviously a worthwhile project.  I am intrigued by the narrow line between those of us that need the project and those that don’t.”

Gareth went on to say that he is still involved because, “It’s about putting something back into the community.  The greater community has supported me for over 30 years and part of the firm’s ethos is to put something back where you can.” Gareth does his bit by supporting the Cathedral Archer Project and coaching rugby to young people for over 10 years.  Personally, Gareth claims that being involved has “given me a broader outlook on life, keeps my feet on the ground and gives me a sense of reward.”

From the CAP perspective, the benefits we gain from Gareth’s continued support are continuity, support from someone who knows and understands the business world, legal advice, business advice and door-opening to all sorts of new people.
