Under the Arches – Working Together and the Power of Supported Employment

3rd September 2026

Every September, organisations across the country come together to celebrate and honour recovery.

For people who have experienced homelessness, recovery is rarely a single defining moment. Instead, it is built through small steps, consistent support, and hope for the future.

The alarm sounds at 6:30am.

It may seem like an ordinary start to the day, but for someone who has spent months, or even years, without a settled routine having somewhere to be can be a symbol of recovery.

The day begins with purpose. There is breakfast to prepare, a bus to catch, a shift to start, and a team to be part of. But progress like this does not happen overnight. Gaps in employment history, low confidence, mental health challenges, and the lasting impact of trauma can make finding work feel out of reach. Even practical tasks, such as writing a CV, preparing for an interview, or owning 'suitable' clothes for work, can feel like barriers to moving forward.

For most people, the first day in a new job is nerve-racking. For someone with lived experience of homelessness, addiction, or complex trauma, the pressure of walking into a workplace, meeting new colleagues and adjusting to new expectations can feel particularly overwhelming.

This is where supported employment can make all the difference.

At The Archer Project, when and if people feel ready, we offer paid, supported employment opportunities through our social enterprises, Printed By Us and Just Clean.

Rather than expecting people to immediately enter the job market, we tailor support to each person's circumstances, helping people progress at a pace that reflects their individual needs and experiences. Our supported employment programme gives people the opportunity to build confidence, develop skills, and take on responsibility within a supportive environment. Through regular check-ins, one-to-one support, benefits advice, and ongoing encouragement, we support individuals to feel empowered during their recovery.

Arriving on time. Completing a shift. Working as part of a team. Going home after a long day's work and putting the key in the front door. These moments may seem small, but they represent progress.

So far in 2026, we have provided 1978 hours of supported employment opportunities, helping people take meaningful steps towards independence and stability.

At Printed By Us, every print represents progression. At Just Clean, every clean represents confidence. Behind every completed order or finished shift is a person building skills, gaining experience, and moving closer to their goals. And, each purchase generates more supported employment opportunities.

Of course, recovery does not begin or end with employment, and for some people, paid work may not be the right step at that particular point in their journey. However, our social enterprises provide opportunities for people to grow, develop, and realise their potential in a supportive environment.

This Recovery Month, we are celebrating the resilience and achievements of the people we work alongside every day. By working together, we can create opportunities and break down barriers.
